Initially written as 'Because we are People', Lyna Dommie Namasaka's 'Feminism for the African Woman' is an argument for the African feminist discourse. It uses historical records, collections of personal stories and statistics to explore African feminism dynamics in attempts to bridge the gap that exists between African modern feminists and the local realities of the other half of African women. It attempts to bridge the disconnect these differences have created and avoid the potential aftermath of this disconnect. More importantly, the book counters the widespread narrative that Africans live in a post feminist era.

Rock of the first wife (Kit Mikayi) stems from the rocky ridges of Seme. When young Okello and Nyowila meet at a festival organized by the great chief, their united passion leads down a destructive path. Their union brings on them a curse so great that only Nyowila sacrificing herself at the great rock can restrain the Chira. Years later, however, destiny seems to have a similar course for the life of their son, proving what the villagers have always deemed true: a curse never really goes away; it just stays in the blood, waiting to be resuscitated and flow through the generations. Such was the case for the young man, Ngeso, a child born out of a tabooed relationship. Ben Okech is a drama and literally enthusiast. He prides in telling tales of the Luo and giving life to them through novels. His quest is to connect with folklore that is facing danger of extinction. UShs135,050.00 UShs119,750.00
Khat is a quasi-legal psychoactive shrub, produced and marketed in the province of Harerge, Ethiopia, and widely consumed throughout Northeast Africa. In the late nineteenth century the main cash crop of Harerge was coffee. Leaf of Allah examines why farming families shifted from cultivating coffee and food crops to growing khat. Demographic, market, and political factors facilitated the emergence of khat as Harerge’s leading agricultural commodity. This development increased the scale of unofficial cross-border trade in consumer goods. This study explores the consequences of the new cash crop for the regional economy as a whole, for farmer-state relations, for the nature and balance of local social relations, as well as for Harerge’s physical, socioeconomic, and political landscapes.

Legacy of Violence: A History of the ...

Sprawling across a quarter of the world's land mass and claiming nearly five hundred colonial subjects, Britain's twentieth-century empire was the largest empire in human history. For many Britons, it epitomized their nation's cultural superiority, but what legacy did the island nation deliver to the world? Covering more than two hundred years of history, Caroline Elkins reveals an evolutionary and racialized doctrine that espoused an unrelenting deployment of violence to secure and preserve the nation's imperial interests. She outlines how ideological foundations of violence were rooted in the Victorian era calls for punishing recalcitrant "natives," and how over time, its forms became increasingly systematized. And she makes clear that when Britain could no longer maintain control over the violence it provoked and enacted, it retreated from empire, destroying and hiding incriminating evidence of its policies and practices. Drawing on more than a decade of research on four continents, Legacy of Violence implicates all sides of Britain's political divide in the creation, execution, and cover-up of imperial violence. By demonstrating how and why violence was the most salient factor underwriting Britain's empire and the nation's imperial identity at home, Elkins upends long-held myths and sheds new light on empire's role in shaping the world today.

When drafting this book, | was like someone whose house was on fire, whose family members were living in that house including his/her mother, father, spouse and siblings with no fire extinguishers nearby. At the same time, family members who are inside the house are unaware of the fire incidents. And the people around the neighbourhoods are unable to see the burning houses. So, the combination of my house is on fire, my people being unaware inside the house, the lack of fire extinguisher and the neighbourhood being unable to see the burning house necessitated me to write up this book entitled “The Silent Gun”. Since people are unable to see and hear the problem in the Horn of Africa-the predominant Somali dwelling territories, I wanted to manifest the magnitude of the problem through extensive literature review, interview key informants and my own observations and life experiences. The book contains real stories, case studies and research findings from Somalia and around the world. Mohamed Abdulahi was born in 1979 in East Africa and lived there the majority of his life. Having studied neaceandConflict Resolution, Abdulahi became a peace activist who is working at national and regional levels for peace. He considers himself as a peace ambassador and strongly believes peace will only come through responsible actions and forgiveness. He is the author of several books where he focuses on the foundations required for peace to be established for his people in East Africa. Mohamed Abdulahi hopes that by highlighting these )silent) problems that many do not realize are there, he can help inspire and empower others to seek to establish greater peace on this earth

Farming and pastoral societies inhabit ever-changing environments. This relationship between environment and rural culture, politics and economy in Tanzania is the subject of this volume which will be valuable in reopening debates on Tanzanian history. In his conclusion, Isaria N. Kimambo, a founding father of Tanzanian history, reflects on the efforts of successive historians to strike a balance between external causes of change and local initiative in their interpretations of Tanzanian history. He shows that nationalist and Marxist historians of Tanzanian history, understandably preoccupied through the first quarter-century of the country's post-colonial history with the impact of imperialism and capitalism on East Africa, tended to overlook the initiatives taken by rural societies to transform themselves. Yet there is good reason for historians to think about the causes of change and innovation in the rural communities of Tanzania, because farming and pastoral people have constantly changed as they adjusted to shifting environmental conditions.

The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed

The story of a murder, a miscarriage of justice, and a man too innocent for his times . . . Mahmood Mattan is a fixture in Cardiff's Tiger Bay, 1952, which bustles with Somali and West Indian sailors, Maltese businessmen and Jewish families. He is a father, chancer, petty criminal. He is a smooth-talker with rakish charm and an eye for a good game. He is many things, but he is not a murderer. So when a shopkeeper is brutally killed and all eyes fall on him, Mahmood isn't too worried. Since his Welsh wife Laura kicked him out for racking up debts he has wandered the streets more often, and there are witnesses who allegedly saw him enter the shop that night. But Mahmood has escaped worse scrapes, and he is innocent in this country where justice is served. Love lends him immunity too: the fierce love of Laura, who forgives his gambling in a heartbeat, and his children. It is only in the run-up to the trial, as the prospect of returning home dwindles, that it will dawn on Mahmood that he is in a fight for his life - against conspiracy, prejudice and cruelty - and that the truth may not be enough to save him.

Brief Summary 14 countries, 42 women, each with a story no one has heard before. What do you do when you're living on the streets and on your period? What does it feel like to have a poo after you've given birth? How do we learn to love our bodies again after they've been abused? And, how do you know if you've ever really orgasmed? We all have questions about our bodies but often women's voices are silenced for being impolite or improper What We're Told Not To Talk About (But We're Going To Anyway) is an important, taboo-breaking book that gives voice to the experiences of women from all walks of life, whose stories might not ordinarily be heard. Alongside Nimko's story of living with FGM, rebuilding her relationship with her own body and being a woman her own way, these are the true stories of real women who are sharing the experiences they've always been told should be secret and shameful. The book is a call to arms for all women to reclaim the narrative around their bodies and to refuse to bow to the taboos which keep us silent. There is no such thing as oversharing. 'A beautiful book with such a wide range of uplifting but often heart-breaking stories. Made us cry and think in equal measure' - Pandora Sykes, co-host of The High Low
