Growing up, we’re all told what we must be to be considered a success and role models. Women are told to be worthy of men and men are taught to be worthy of manhood. ‘Because we are people’ needed to be written to counter the current dominant African societal narratives that have wrecked gendered interactions. It is a perspective on understanding these dynamics so as to learn how to maneuver them. You can’t outsmart what you don’t understand. The book uses personal and other stories based of the experiences of real people making it a relatable read.

Description
Because we are people explains the socialisation of African societies and how it affects our gendered relations. It explains the social, economic and political effects of this socialisation on real men and women. How a socialisation that is focused on demeaning rather than building bleeds into our economic and political systems creating unending cycles of dysfunction and arrested development.

Nothing has educated me more on African societal sociology. I loved this book, it’s exploration of intersectionality was great. It’s such a unique perspective that is well-written and deeply personalized.
