Career Choice

Choosing a career is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. It is a decision that will likely impact your entire life. You will likely experience tension during the process of choosing a career. With the correct information and guidance, you can make a wise career decision that will lead to greater fulfillment in life.

In Africa, young people in high school often lack the information and guidance they need to make wise career decisions. Most schools lack career guidance counsellors. As a result, young people often resort to peers and relatives for career advice. Others take the course allocated to them during college selection even if they don’t like it. How can you navigate through the career decision process and come out with the right choice for yourself?

When the lead author of this book was in high school, he was required to select university courses in the final year. His school provided him with little information on what it meant to choose a career path. He knew very little about the kinds of jobs available after college. He made my final career decision based on advice from relatives. At that time, he chose what, to his family, sounded cool or prestigious. Medicine seemed the most prestigious.

After practising medicine for five years, it was time for him to make a change. I yearned to master leadership. He shifted to management. After leading and managing teams for over 20 years, he has observed how picking the right career is crucial in finding fulfillment and purpose.

The most satisfied are those who are passionate about what they do. It reflects in their productivity and quality of life. But how can you pick the right career path if you don’t know what it is?
