A woman can survive a lonely marriage, an empty bed, a bitter divorce, a boardroom that keeps stealing her work, a family that calls pressure love, and a city that knows how to watch her without appearing to stare.
But what happens when the one person who finally sees her has been watching too closely and lived inside her life literally for months.
Across Cairo, Accra, Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam, seven accomplished women are holding their lives together with elegance, discipline and just enough private denial to get through the day.
Nadia has mastered the performance of a beautiful Cairo marriage that no longer touches her. Zara runs a major bank in Accra and returns each night to a house with one untouched side of the bed. Blessing is fighting to keep the technology company she built from being rewritten as her exhusband’s achievement. Dr Seun is newly divorced in Nairobi, funny, brilliant and pretending her freedom does not frighten her. Kefilwe has turned discipline into armour in Johannesburg. Tigist has mistaken endurance for faith in Addis Ababa. Zawadi, in Dar es Salaam, is still waiting to be chosen without being diminished.
Then the men arrive.
They listen, remember, and notice the exact wound each woman has spent years hiding in plain sight. They share songs, asks the right question, brings calm into a legal fight, knows when to wait, speaks the language of faith, family, work, grief and desire so fluently that it feels like love.
For a while, it is almost beautiful.
Until the wrong sentence appears in the wrong hands.
Until a private message becomes public.
Until money moves.
Until a vanished profile leaves behind a trail the world was not supposed to find.
Until one woman realises that being seen by the wrong person can be more dangerous than being ignored.
After Checkout is an intimate and deeply unsettling novel about longing, power, loneliness, reputation and the invisible traces women leave behind while trying to be loved. It is for every reader who has ever wondered how much of themselves they have already given away online without noticing.
Seven women. Seven cities. Seven private hungers.
And somewhere, someone has been taking notes, and when the right time comes, they will pounce.
