A CALF OF A BULL tells the story of a young boy who is tussling for education, communal unity and change but he is faced with the uncompromising dogma of his culture and the growing violence of his father. Gatwec wants to go to school but his father wants him to only inspect the calves. Also, a swamp stands in his way. Will the boy drown in the swamp if he stealthily goes to school?
In a culture that forbids boys from communal privileges and leadership, can Gatwec achieve the unity and change he wants yet he refuses facial scarification? His father and the clan elders ritualize him by the ancestral spirits but he goes on to join the church. He must escape his father’s fury or he dies like his sister. After escaping, will he remain a slave boy for an Arab soldier or return to his father’s violence?
