Once upon a time, Tracy Whitney was one of the best thieves in the business. Then she settled down and had a child—a beautiful, bright, mischievous boy who was the center of her life. Tracy planned to spend the rest of her days quietly, living anonymously deep in the stunning Colorado mountains, devoted to raising her son. But tragedy forces her to face her greatest nightmare. Now, with nothing left to protect, this superb con artist, jewel thief, computer wizard, and cat burglar returns to the hunt, more dangerous, ruthless, and reckless than ever. The world faces a new terror threat from Group 99, a diverse collection of global hackers intent on the collapse of capitalism and private wealth and the creation of a new world order. When the group turns to violence—kidnapping an American investigative journalist, shooting a British military hostage, and blowing up an international industrialist—the mysterious woman pulling their strings, a wily and wealthy American known only as Althea, becomes the CIA’s most sought criminal. But their only hope of finding her is a woman with a dark and dangerous past of her own. A woman who has also successfully evaded detection by the authorities around the world: Tracy. Convinced that Althea is behind the deadly act that shattered her life, Tracy sets out on a global hunt to flush out her prey. But as she soon discovers, the truth is as elusive as her target. Hampered by corruption, lies, and enemies masked as allies, Tracy will be pushed to the brink, where she must face her darkest demons. All of her experience tells Tracy that the answers are right in front of her—if only she can look at the clues in the right way. Propelled by an unquenchable thirst for revenge, and with the fate of so many resting in her hands, just how reckless will Tracy become when she has nothing left to lose? An addictive tale of espionage, mystery, passion, greed, betrayal, and vengeance that takes you from the beautiful Rocky Mountains to Europe’s oldest and grandest cities, filled with a cast of intriguing characters both new and familiar, Sidney Sheldon’s Reckless is a glamorous thrill ride that will leave you breathless until its shocking end."

Couldn’t put the book down. Was nervous about finishing it at the same time couldn’t wait to finish it. Mixed emotions at the end. The author did a good job in detailing almost three to four generations within a book which many can relate to. I am now looking for similar books which I know don’t exist probably but hope there will be a follow up to this great account of events soon. I could also relate to quite a number of things in a unique way. Congratulations Deb and power unto you!

I was anticipating reading the book from the moment I heard Deborah Auko was writing a book, the teasing on social media was a beautiful build up for all the excitement I had whilst waiting to purchase a copy.
This book has made me realise how intricately connected the stories of our lives are, going by how the author is related to Akuku Danger and how her mother was the Zainabu Ochieng Kabaselleh sang about.
It’s also not perfect but such is life, life is messy and so are we.
We immortalise ourselves when we tell our stories.

I read the book a day after the launch…the beautiful launch.
The book itself is top-notch quality. I love the hardcover.
The print is also good. No squinting.
The authors prose effortlessly superb and beautiful.
It is a unique book, very raw.
It evokes your emotions, every chapter has its own emotions. So you own and go through them.
The cover is also symbolic, the tree with the penetrating roots shared by the father and daughter…
When reading one is able to embrace each character because each one of them plays a role.
The author candidly takes you through each chapter, a peek through her childhood…No way can you skip a chapter to another. They all have a connection.
Reading the book reminded me of my childhood. I grew up in Huruma. I remember Safelife.
How it started, the growth, the beautiful women. When sent to buy mboga at Huruma corner esp on Fridays, I would just passby to marvel at the many cars parked around (most were peugeots) and the rhumba music they played…Franco esp Laliye and Mario!
And how it all went down till its closure. I remember.
Growing up in eastlands makes you a tough cookie. And loving books saved many of us. I still love books…
Tendo’s style of writing is also unique. It shows you that a child has a powerful memory, they will remember every detail in each phase of their lives. Her memories have given us a beautiful book.
I bet no one would believe you are a first time author.
I hope, Oprah Winfrey comes across the book for her Book club!😊
The book earned itself a top position on the upper shelf of my collection.
I highly recommend it.
Looking forward to owning another book from you, Tendo.

Just like the name , rough silk is a rough silk to all your senses. It’s beautiful but will also show you the ugly side of life.
Just when you think you can foretell the trajectory Deb’s life is taking, the next chapter is so unexpected that you need a break to let all sink in!
For me it was reliving my childhood pain and loss coined beautifully with humor so amidst tears I would still smile .
Highly highly recommended, good job Deb!

The last book/ novel I ever read was the River and the Source, I do not watch movies/ series too unless it’s a reality show….Then Rough Silk was given To us by her Royal Highness Tamalie, Mami, Nyar Zainabu, Nyawasaki, Deb, Tendo…I cried most of the time because Deb lost her Dad to Cancer…but again Everyone wants to be Deb…can you survive a day in her childhood life? This book is the best thing that happened to my Generation, our children and their children…Well Done Nyawasaki

A beautiful read. I loved it especially because I can relate both in context and culture. I have laughed so hard especially about Nyamson the dwarf, hilarious!!!. I have equally teared through the trials and tribulations the author has gone through with her beloved dad. Every situation is familiar to a majority of us who have grown up in Nairobi Eastlands. I have learnt the importance of family and importance of us as a generation teaching our children and our children’s children who we are and where we come from. My favorite quote from the book is right from the start ” What happens to you is also happening for you”.

“Dad moved us to into a guest house in Eastleigh” I am stuck, in this statement, something has been triggered in me. I started well, infact at some point I read while listening to Okatch Biggy tunes. Alas!
As team fast readers, I agree this is not a book to read in haste. I take a rest for today.
