Growing up I often felt different from my peers, but I couldn’t pinpoint why. My parents would often tell me to “settle down” or “concentrate,” but I always had too many thoughts going through my head at once to relax. I only had enthusiasm for the things I liked and had zero energy for those I didn’t like. As an adult, I wondered why I often switched between jobs and interests, zoned out in long conversations, often misplaced things that were here just a minute ago and really struggled to keep time.
For years, I believed that my short concentration spans, my impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation were just character flaws that I needed to overcome through willpower. It wasn’t until I hit a particularly low point in my late twenties that I sought professional help and received the diagnosis that explained my whole life.
Within this book, I offer insights into my own journey with Adult ADHD – the ups, the downs, and the moments of growth that have shaped an understanding of myself and my condition. I want to offer practical strategies that have helped me to navigate daily challenges and to thrive.
