Capitalism Without Capital: The Rise ...

KShs3,000.00 KShs2,500.00
The first comprehensive account of the growing dominance of the intangible economy Early in the twenty-first century, a quiet revolution occurred. For the first time, the major developed economies began to invest more in intangible assets, like design, branding, R&D, and software, than in tangible assets, like machinery, buildings, and computers. For all sorts of businesses, from tech firms and pharma companies to coffee shops and gyms, the ability to deploy assets that one can neither see nor touch is increasingly the main source of long-term success. But this is not just a familiar story of the so-called new economy. Capitalism without Capital shows that the growing importance of intangible assets has also played a role in some of the big economic changes of the last decade. The rise of intangible investment is, Jonathan Haskel and Stian Westlake argue, an underappreciated cause of phenomena from economic inequality to stagnating productivity. Haskel and Westlake bring together a decade of research on how to measure intangible investment and its impact on national accounts, showing the amount different countries invest in intangibles, how this has changed over time, and the latest thinking on how to assess this. They explore the unusual economic characteristics of intangible investment, and discuss how these features make an intangible-rich economy fundamentally different from one based on tangibles. Capitalism without Capital concludes by presenting three possible scenarios for what the future of an intangible world might be like, and by outlining how managers, investors, and policymakers can exploit the characteristics of an intangible age to grow their businesses, portfolios, and economies.

Scent: A Natural History of Fragrance...

KShs4,000.00 KShs3,500.00
A fascinating exploration of the natural history of scent and human perceptions of fragrance from the viewpoint of plant and pollinator Plants have long harnessed the chemical characteristics of aromatic compounds to shape the world around them. Frankincense resin from the genus Boswellia seals injured tissues and protects trees from invading pathogens. Jasmine produces a molecule called linalool that attracts pollinating moths with its flowery scent. Tobacco uses a similarly sweet-smelling compound called benzyl acetone to attract pollinators. Only recently in the evolutionary history of plants, however, have humans learned to co-opt their fragrances to seduce, heal, protect, and alter moods themselves. In this wide-ranging and accessible new book, biologist-turned-perfumer Elise Vernon Pearlstine turns our human-centered perception of fragrance on its head and investigates plants' evolutionary reasons for creating aromatic molecules. Delving into themes of spirituality, wealth, power, addiction, royalty, fantasy, and more, Pearlstine uncovers the natural history of aromatic substances and their intersection with human culture and civilization.

Shadow in Perpetuity – Hard Journey with Cancer was launched in 2021. The author, Professor Nicholas Athieno-Abinya He is a prolific storyteller who  inspires us with a combination of wit and sobriety, the complications  and sparse triumphs of treating cancer. He is a consultant medical Oncologist at the Nairobi Hospital Cancer Centre. He was formerly Professor of Medicine at the University of Nairobi and Head of Oncology at Aghakhan University Hospital, Nairobi. He is the author of Drug management of Haematologic Neoplasm by Jomo Kenyatta Foundation 2016. This book is talking more about his journey with cancer. Cancer is common and causes a lot of panic. Most cancers when diagnosed early are highly curable, but are incurable when diagnosed late. In this country we have personnel and institutions that can take care of most cancers though not all, and few need referral outside. The problem is that many people don't have faith in local institutions and personnel, and demand referral out. The reality is that over 90-95% of cancers which cannot be cured locally can also not be cured elsewhere. People therefore have a tendency to go and waste money abroad, where oftentimes they are made to believe that they are cured, while this may not be true. When confronted with a diagnosis of cancer, one should promptly seek help from relevant experts, take the prescribed path, and leave the rest to God. If the end is inevitable, so be it.

SMAAT Finance by Jane Isiaho

KShs990.00
Many people run into multiple problems owing to their failure to manage their finances in a way that works for them. Invariably, the problems they cause themselves spill over to their performance and whether they are employees or business people, soon these problems begin to affect organizational performance. It is therefore in the interests of any organization that the people running it know and are able to manage their personal finances. This book goes beyond classroom knowledge to provide individuals with a practical model for financial independence. It seeks to demystify personal financial management by breaking it down to five simple steps in a model we term as SMAAT finance that any individual can apply with ease. This model helps individuals come up with practical ways of managing their personal finances in a manner that ensures they not only are able to live within their means, but also create surpluses within their current incomes for savings and investment. This model does not offer a ‘get-rich-quick’ miracle, but for sure promises a life of financial independence after careful application of the same.

Even Here by Ivy Gikonyo

They say experience is the best teacher. What a tragedy it is, that the saying applies to grief as well. Previously, I thought it was a word that describes the sadness that comes with the demise of a loved one. However, through experience, I know grief is unexplainable anguish that seems to have no end. It is not just one emotion. No. It is a bitter cocktail of them all. Grief is not remembering what life was like before it and wondering whether there will ever be a semblance of that life in the future. Grief is asking God to show up but wondering whether He will and feeling guilty about the waning faith. Grief is untold loneliness, even with company – the kind that makes us feel like no one could ever understand us. Ivy Gikonyo is a born-again Christian and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She holds a Master’s Degree in International Law from Oxford Brookes University, Oxford; a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law and a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Kenyatta University, Nairobi. If circumstances allowed, she would be a life-long student, never leaving school. In her spare time, she is a professional bathroom singer. She lives in Nairobi, Kenya. "This book is courageous and honest, acknowledging that grief is a natural and appropriate response to loss that tears the soul and causes one to question God our maker, not unlike Job of Ur of the Chaldees. Ivy’s groundedness in her faith shines powerfully through and she lays out practical steps towards recovering from such loss." - Wanjiku Mugane, Lawyer, Investment Banker & Entrepreneur
