Every time you see that person the physical “flight” response in your body goes into overdrive and it’s all you can do to not bolt and run from the room., Are you feeling that someone you trusted very much stabbed you in the back? Are you in a trap of offense that has led you to be unable to function properly in your calling because of the wounds and hurts that offenses have caused in your life? Are you handicapped and hindered from fulfilling your full potential because of the pain of unforgiveness? Perhaps you picked this book up thinking, “Just try to convince me that I should forgive them.” The person who hurt you is not repentant and doesn’t care about the harm he or she has done to your life. "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland” —Isaiah 43:19 Sunday, 8th March 2009 is a day forever etched in the recesses of my mind. Salty tears streamed down my face, I fathomed life as a widow. As I knelt before Jacob’s body, he whispered to me, “Maama Isabel, do not worry about me. I am fine.” His whisper gave me hope as I contemplated the pieces of this altered reality. How would I tell my girls? And what of the life of the unborn child who grew inside my belly? Finding my inner strength, I slowly rose to my feet, determined to face whatever lie before me. This was the first day of a new chapter in my life.

2021 Golden Poppy Award Winner for Poetry - Chosen by the California Independent Booksellers Alliance 2022 California Book Award Finalist Politically astute, filled with wisdom and great humanity, this is poetry meant to conjure a healing and provoke a confrontation, an invitation to a journey through Black America. "Words are not the revolution itself, Eisen-Martin seems to say, and yet this book disturbed me more than any other I read this year. It reminds me that poetry can rewire our thinking—can actually change our minds—by using nothing like the rote language we’re so used to hearing in speech and in prose. It can jolt us out of patterns, back into intelligence."—The New York Times, "The Best Poetry of 2021" A rhapsodic follow-up to Tongo Eisen-Martin's Heaven is All Goodbyes, this collection further explores themes of love and loss, family and faith, refracted through the lens of Black experience. These poems honor intellectual tradition and ancestral knowledge while blazing an entirely new path, recording and replaying the poet's sensory travels through America, from its packed metropolises to desolate anytowns. Radical, outraged, knowing, wry, and deeply humane, these are poems of survival that soar with a vision of collective liberation.

Angela Merkel: Europes Most Influenti...

This is the fascinating tale of Angela Merkel’s political ascent, in which she outmaneuvered her male colleagues and made Germany the strongest economy in Europe. With the storytelling gifts of a novelist, as well as nuanced political expertise garnered from over a decade of experience as an academic and journalist, Matt Qvortrup gives readers unprecedented, personal insight into Frau Merkel’s upbringing under communism, describing how the Secret Police tried to recruit her as a spy, how she lived as a squatter in Berlin, and how she went from distributing leaflets to sitting at the Cabinet table in Helmut Kohl’s government in less than a year. This is the story―told for the first time in English―of how Merkel and her staff of mostly female advisors repeatedly outsmarted the old boys network of conservative male politicians in Germany, turning her country into a more liberal and more prosperous place. Angela Merkel: Europe's Most Influential Leader combines the narrative of Merkel’s life with a vivid account of German history from 1945 to the present day, featuring cameo appearances by Willy Brandt, Konrad Adenauer, and Helmut Kohl. At a time when Merkel is the chief representative of the west in the negotiations with Putin over the Ukraine, she is also the woman who holds the keys to British membership of the EU. Anyone interested in our time, in the politics of today, should read this lively account of the woman with a doctorate in quantum physics who has become the undisputed queen of Europe. Read less

The Modern Book of the Dead: A Revolu...

KShs4,500.00 KShs3,900.00
A modern exploration of what happens after death, uniting spirituality with philosophy, biology, neuroscience, and rich examples of afterlife experiences. What happens to us after we die? It remains perhaps the single most important question we can ask, one that still inspires thousands to turn to the Tibetan and Egyptian Books of the Dead for hope and comfort. But we can no longer rely solely on ancient wisdom for truly useful answers about our own mortality. We must find explanations for the afterlife in the fruits of modern experience. Critically acclaimed author Ptolemy Tompkins grew up in a family where questions about the shape and fate of the human soul were discussed on a daily basis, but it was only after his father’s passing that he began to consider death in a genuinely concrete way. In this boldly unconventional book—part memoir, part history of ideas, part road map to what might truly await us—Tompkins approaches the question of the afterlife with refreshing intimacy. Weaving together philosophy, science, stories of near-death experiences, and theology, he offers readers a new perspective on death and comes to an amazing and uplifting conclusion: that, somehow, human consciousness lives on.

God, the Devil, and Darwin: A Critiqu...

In the last fifteen years a controversial new theory of the origins of biological complexity and the nature of the universe has been fomenting bitter debates in education and science policy across North America, Europe, and Australia. Backed by intellectuals at respectable universities, Intelligent Design Theory (ID) proposes an alternative to accepted accounts of evolutionary theory: that life is so complex, and that the universe is so fine-tuned for the appearance of life, that the only plausible explanation is the existence of an intelligent designer. For many ID theorists, the designer is taken to be the god of Christianity. Niall Shanks has written the first accessible introduction to, and critique of, this controversial new intellectual movement. Shanks locates the growth of ID in the last two decades of the twentieth century in the growing influence of the American religious right. But as he shows, its roots go back beyond Aquinas to Ancient Greece. After looking at the historical roots of ID, Shanks takes a hard look at its intellectual underpinnings, discussing modern understandings of thermodynamics, and how self-organizing processes lead to complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. He considers cosmological arguments for ID rooted in so-called "anthropic coincidences" and also tackles new biochemical arguments for ID based on "irreducible biological complexity." Throughout he shows how arguments for ID lack cohesion, rest on errors and unfounded suppositions, and generally are grossly inferior to evolutionary explanations. While ID has been proposed as a scientific alternative to evolutionary biology, Shanks argues that ID is in fact "old creationist wine in new designer label bottles" and moreover is a serious threat to the scientific and democratic values that are our cultural and intellectual inheritance from the Enlightenment.

The Biblical account of Life, as we know it today, has its nascent beginnings in the Garden of Eden - the garden planted by God Himself. And yet, this is only a tiny fraction of the entire universe that is in existence. Everything within the borders of the universe points to One who cannot fit within any boundary, and yet reaches out and invites us to know Him in all His limitlessness. The first two humans that had their dwelling in Eden, were unfortunately the last as well. They were not only God's masterpiece, but the crown on His creation. One can only imagine what Eden's picturesque sights afforded any observer walking into it. We follow these two, Adam and Eve in time through their daily delightful encounters, as they unfold each petal of adventure, and discover, with each passing day, the treasure that creation really is.
