In The Champion Student, I point out to the attitudinal causes of poor performance at KCSE. Specifically, I warn students not to love quick results that are not backed by hard work. I advise students not to expect miracles where hard work is needed. I also demystify the myth of genius. Using examples such as the exciting case of Polgar Sisters, I encourage students to trust in consistent hard work done without procrastination. The book also suggests skills that are needed to pass exams such as personal organization and people skills. While most students in Kenya know the value of having a timetable for personal study, few ever make use of it. I have also written about pitfalls to avoid such as addictions. Too many students in Kenyan schools are handling different kinds of addictions such as use of drugs, addiction to mobile phone and TVs, and lately, betting. I discuss the science of addictions and suggest ways in which students can develop winning habits. I also expound on the benefit of delayed gratification. I extol the benefits of reading, not just to pass examinations but also for life. I also urge them to develop a personal relationship with God. This is a must-read for students, parents, school administrators and anyone with an interest in the welfare of young people, particularly in an African setting.
