Kenyatta Otieno has published his second book; *Kavirondo: The story of Luhyas and Luos*. KAVIRONDO is a masterful 338-page narrative that intricately weaves the shared history, culture, and evolution of the Luo and Luhya communities. Through a blend of vivid storytelling and meticulous historical analysis, the book unravels the intertwined destinies of these two groups, examining how colonialism froze fluid ethnic identities into rigid constructs and how these communities, once connected, became labeled as separate entities. Otieno dives deep into profound topics, such as the disproportionate toll of HIV on the Luo compared to the Luhya and the remarkable role of Luhya women in bolstering Luo populations during the malaria epidemics of the past. The author explores the transformative influence of missionaries and the rise of independent churches in Western Kenya, painting a compelling portrait of how religion reshaped culture. Beyond history, Kavirondo celebrates the vibrant contributions of Luos and Luhyas to music, activism, sports, and trade unions, offering inspiring glimpses into the lives of icons like Okatch Biggy, Owiro "Karl Marx" Christopher and GPO Oulu. This book is not merely a historical account; it is a celebration of resilience, coexistence, and shared heritage. It challenges the reader to reconsider the nature of ethnicity and learn from the unity of these communities, whose collective stories transcend borders. For anyone seeking to understand Kenya’s rich tapestry of culture and history, Kavirondo is an essential read.

While the day was dictated by sunrise and sunset, days were separated relatively, with ‘today’ being the anchor relative to other days. Months, on the other hand, followed the moon’s cycle and hence the twelve months of the year. Months were named relative to the weather of the time and the activities it dictated. For this reason, the names of months were largely descriptive. This provides an overview of the concept of time in Gusii and the rationale for naming the months in the manner they were.

African mothers have always been the toughest, fathers could be somewhat docile while grandparents are the spoilers. In this book I have compiled my experiences with my parents and other members of their family like in a typical African home and their influences on me, those with teachers in public schools whose dealings with us was like a military training and politicians who are the monsters on deck. It is often a hunt and escape, run and chase and catch and seize and thrash type of relationship. A relationship that made us to be continually aligned. A relationship that looking back is one to laugh at. That democracy is the freedom and right to vote, with the know how of choosing the candidate you want on the ballot papers but with the lack of wisdom of judging who is the right leader to choose, democracy, the sound system is failing. Should there be education on how to choose representatives?

President William Ruto as a leader has fared much worse than candidate William Ruto. The cautious optimism that his constituent political bases had in him during the 2022 electoral season seems to have fizzled out fairly quickly after he took over power. His popularity, momentum, and the hope in his hustler dream among the key supporters has died out faster than anticipated. To be fair though, presidents are rarely popular while in office. So, the question is always, are they unpopular for the right reasons. The enthusiasm of energetic presidential campaigns rarely translates well into the often-cold mechanics of everyday leadership decision-making, once they get into office. Hence, most presidents move from the popularity of candidature, to a slump in likeability once they are in the presidential role. They then get a popularity boost once they are out of office or after retirement-depending on the strength of their presidential legacy.
