When drafting this book, | was like someone whose house was on fire, whose family members were living in that house including his/her mother, father, spouse and siblings with no fire extinguishers nearby. At the same time, family members who are inside the house are unaware of the fire incidents. And the people around the neighbourhoods are unable to see the burning houses. So, the combination of my house is on fire, my people being unaware inside the house, the lack of fire extinguisher and the neighbourhood being unable to see the burning house necessitated me to write up this book entitled “The Silent Gun”. Since people are unable to see and hear the problem in the Horn of Africa-the predominant Somali dwelling territories, I wanted to manifest the magnitude of the problem through extensive literature review, interview key informants and my own observations and life experiences. The book contains real stories, case studies and research findings from Somalia and around the world. Mohamed Abdulahi was born in 1979 in East Africa and lived there the majority of his life. Having studied neaceandConflict Resolution, Abdulahi became a peace activist who is working at national and regional levels for peace. He considers himself as a peace ambassador and strongly believes peace will only come through responsible actions and forgiveness. He is the author of several books where he focuses on the foundations required for peace to be established for his people in East Africa. Mohamed Abdulahi hopes that by highlighting these )silent) problems that many do not realize are there, he can help inspire and empower others to seek to establish greater peace on this earth

You were never the smartest child, but even you should know that when a dead woman offers you a cigarette, the polite thing to do would be to take it. Especially when that dead woman is your mother. The St. Bernard women have lived in Morne Marie, the house on top of a hill outside Port Angeles, for generations. Built from the ashes of a plantation that enslaved their ancestors, it has come to shelter a lineage that is bonded by much more than blood. One woman in each generation of St. Bernards is responsible for the passage of the city's souls into the afterlife. But Yejide's relationship with her mother, Petronella, has always been contorted by anger and neglect, which Petronella stubbornly carries to her death bed, leaving Yejide unprepared to fulfill her destiny. Raised in the countryside by a devout Rastafarian mother, Darwin has always abided by the religious commandment not to interact with death. He has never been to a funeral, much less seen a dead body. But when his ailing mother can no longer work and the only job he can find is grave digging, he must betray the life she built for him in order to provide for them both. Newly shorn of his dreadlocks and his past and determined to prove himself, Darwin finds himself adrift in a city electric with possibility and danger. Yejide and Darwin will meet inside the gates of Fidelis, Port Angeles's largest and oldest cemetery, where the dead lie uneasy in their graves and a reckoning with fate beckons them both. A masterwork of lush imagination and immersive lyricism, When We Were Birds is a spellbinding novel about inheritance, loss, and love's seismic power to heal.

You already know these stereotypes. So often Africa is depicted simplistically as an arid red landscape of famines and safaris, uniquely plagued by poverty and strife. In this funny and insightful book, Dipo Faloyin offers a much-needed corrective. He examines each country's colonial heritage, and explores a wide range of subjects, from chronicling urban life in Lagos and the lively West African rivalry over who makes the best Jollof rice, to the story of democracy in seven dictatorships and the dangers of stereotypes in popular culture. By turns intimate and political, Africa Is Not A Country brings the story of the continent towards reality, celebrating the energy and fabric of its different cultures and communities in a way that has never been done before.

Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo

KShs1,990.00 KShs1,690.00
Glory centers around the unexpected fall of Old Horse, a long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a rumbustious nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup, in November 2017, of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's president of nearly four decades, Bulawayo's bold, vividly imagined novel shows a country imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices who unveil the ruthlessness and cold strategy required to uphold the illusion of absolute power, and the imagination and bullet-proof optimism to overthrow it completely. As with her debut novel We Need New Names, Bulawayo's fierce voice and lucid imagery immerses us in the daily life of a traumatized nation, revealing the dazzling life force and irrepressible wit that lies barely concealed beneath the surface of seemingly bleak circumstances. At the center of this tumult is Destiny, who has returned to Jidada from exile to bear witness to revolution--and focus on the unofficial history and the potential legacy of the women who have quietly pulled the strings in this country. The animal kingdom--its connection to our primal responses and resonance in the mythology, folktales, and fairytales that define cultures the world over--unmasks the surreality of contemporary global politics to help us understand our world more clearly, even as Bulwayo plucks us right out of it. Glory is a blockbuster, an exhilarating ride, and crystalizes a turning point in history with the texture and nuance that only the greatest of fiction can.

The subject of leadership has been written all the years by both big and small names, in large and small prints. Why, then, would I bother to write another book on this subject? Why would one need to read this book? Perhaps in the following few paragraphs I will be able to make a case for this inspired cause and thus gain your most precious audience. "Running away from a problem does not solve it," one of my teachers said. "You must confront the problem in order to solve it." In my childhood, I learnt the value of taking responsibility whenever there was something that needed to be addressed. These were my first leadership lessons. In that case, therefore, in my study and practice, I still felt a sense of responsibility to add my little voice to this very important subject, even if doing so could only help a single individual to be inspired into becoming the person The Creator intended in him or her. This book, over and above learning leadership, helps people to identify their purpose in life and unify it with their leadership agenda with a view of leaving a timeless legacy. Life therefore becomes one adventurous journey of leadership to all who study this book. Of course, the very first person that you ought to lead is yourself and by being able to appropriately do so, you earn the right to lead others too. They, themselves, shall be willing to be led by you. In this book, I share personal life experiences in leadership in the simplest possible language for leaders at all levels to draw maximum benefit from. My innate drive to keenly and reflectively study situations from every facet of life I get involved in and my love for music found an opportunity to converge. Thus, this book uses the metaphor of orchestral music to share salient leadership lessons that would hitherto stay hidden from some people. This is not a music book. It is a leadership book. You do not have to know music in order to appreciate it. All you have to do is contemplatively tap your right foot to its beats as you drink from its priceless pot of knowledge. As life would have it, the universe is full of music. All around us is music in the sense of harmony. The Creator did not intend any chaos, but harmony in all we see and do. That is what makes music; many parts, many instruments, many participants but one beautiful piece of art that is pleasing to the ear. The same applies in all our leadership positions. We have to bring all pieces together in order to achieve the envisioned results. That is the language of life. Whoever makes the best symphony becomes the greatest leader;- the greatest director for the orchestra. It is my belief that you will enjoy the musicality in this leadership book as you dutifully mine the nuggets of wisdom that lurk within the pages into your life. The lessons you are going to learn by studying it shall forever remain imprinted in your heart and positively contribute to your immortality. I wish you all the best in your leadership endeavors and look forward to receiving feedback from you about how this book impacted your life.

Eighteen years after the genocide that made Rwanda international news, but left it all but abandoned by the West, the country has achieved a miraculous turnaround. Rising out of the complete devastation of a failed state, Rwanda has emerged on the world stage yet again-this time with a unique model for governance and economic development under the leadership of its strong and decisive president, Paul Kagame. Here, Patricia Crisafulli & Andrea Redmond look at Kagame's leadership, his drive for excellence and execution that draws comparisons to an American CEO and emphasizes the development of a sophisticated and competitive workforce that leverages human capital. In Rwanda, the ultimate turnaround, strong and effective leadership has made a measurable and meaningful difference. Rwanda's progress offers an example for other developing nations to lift themselves out of poverty without heavy reliance on foreign aid through decentralization, accountability, self-determination, and self-sufficiency. The authors also explore Rwanda's journey toward its goal of becoming a middle-income nation with a technology-based economy, and its progress to encourage private sector development and foster entrepreneurship, while also making gains in education, healthcare, and food security-and all with a strong underpinning of reconciliation and unification. As so many nations stand on the brink of political and economic revolution, this is a timely and fascinating look at the implications of Rwanda's success for the rest of the continent-and the world.

And O the lofty blowing of the horns At various stations of the homeward journey When the horn-bearers suddenly – Blared their message to the mountain Sounded their object to the plains Announced their cause to the sunset Declared their purpose to the sunrise – Bv…..u! Bv…..u! Bv…..u! Bv……………u! Signifying that in the sundry homesteads Of the candidates returning from afar, An impending deed was to be done – That would never be undone or done again! This is the apex of Wangusa’s poetic career to date. As a category, the work is characterised by being phenomenally rooted in indigenous culture. And besides being strongly lyrical, it is dynamic, dramatic poetry. There are here multiple voices, various personas in life’s problematic arena. It is poetry not to be just recited but to be performed for maximum effect.

Traditional Marriage in Gusii

KShs800.00 KShs700.00
Traditional Marriage in Gusii (Enyangi y’Ebitinge), published posthumously, documents the process of old-style marriage in Gusii and related steps, culminating in a wedding ceremony. The process was meticulous and made of a series of steps, each with very clear purpose and intended not just for the couple but also their families and clans. Abagusii attached a lot of value to marriage. It was a major landmark in the ‘growing up’ of a man or woman in that society. Marriage marked the transition from the care of one’s parents to being independent and taking care of oneself and one’s family. That transition was possible only after marriage. The importance of marriage and the honour it was accorded is underlined by the respect that was given to a married woman. For example, she found herself late in getting home by someone, that person had an obligation to ensure that she got to her home safely; after all, she was a mother and her progeny would be the link to the future.
